SINOPSIS
COMPETENCIAS
Generales
ideologías, géneros y etnias, así como a la profundización en culturas ajenas que impone el estudio de las literaturas en lengua inglesa. Desarrollo de la corrección política.
CG3- Knowledge of literatures in English Language. CG3- Knowledge of the history and culture of English language countries. CG6- Ability to negotiate, make himself/ herself understandable, write reports and documents, handle massive and complex information, use computer systems and present products, ideas and reports in English language. CG7- Ability to orientate interdisciplinary the competences mentioned above in order make them useful to a variety of professional environments. CG10- Development of critical attitude about the English language, cultures and literatures. CG11- Personal and intellectual attitudes intended to the establishment of relations and dialogues between different ideologies, genders and ethnic communities, as well as the acquisition of a thorough knowledge of the variety of cultures connected with the study of literatures in English language. Also the development of a political correctness is required.

The necessary capacity not only to enquire into the most complex poetical manifestations, but also into all those elements of real life which require deep reflection and critical analysis.
Específicas
As a result of the teaching/ learning process, the student will be able to identify and analyse the poetical features characteristic of the modernist movement, to express critical views about the works written by modernist poets and about the relationship between such works and the historical and cultural contexts from which they emerged. Finally, the student will be able to detect the influence of modernism on subsequent poetical movements.
ACTIVIDADES DOCENTES
Clases teóricas
Theoretical introduction to the course content through lectures. These lectures will be aimed at providing a general theoretical overview of the material.
Seminarios
Debate groups that will practically address the course contentthrough analysis, discussions, and contrasting opinions. These debate groups will be supervised and guided by a professor.
Clases prácticas
Guided individual and/or group reading of poems and other representative texts from the studied period. Participatory and collaborative debate, discussion, and analysis of the texts.

En esta asignatura se enseña a los estudiantes la poesía y las poéticas de los poetas angloamericanos más significativos. Primero, nuestros estudiantes se familiarizan con el simbolismo y el imagismo, y, a continuación el curso se dedica a la lectura y análisis de textos fundamentales de la poesía modernista en lengua inglesa, de autores tales como T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, William Carlos Williams, H.D, Mina Loy, Marianne Moore, Langston Hughes... entro otros. El enfoque pedagógico es fundamentalmente práctico y orientado al desarrollo de destrezas de lectura crítica.

In this course we teach our students the poetry and poetics written by the most significant Anglo-American poets. First, our students become familiar with symbolism and imagism, and then most of the course is devoted to reading and discussing key texts of modernist poetry, written by authors such as T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, William Carlos Williams, H.D, Mina Loy, Marianne Moore, Langston Hughes... among others. The pedagogical approach is fundamentally practical and oriented towards the development of critical reading ability.
Requisitos
It is recommended to have passed English Poetry from the Enlightenment to the Avant-Garde before taking Anglo-American Modernist Poetry.
Objetivos
- Aprender los fundamentos teóricos de las poéticas modernistas, así como familiarizarse con sus principales poetas y con la obra crítica sobre sus elementos de ruptura conceptual y formal.
- Conocer la poesía modernista anglo-norteamericana y sus propuestas cada vez más radicales.
- Conocer la poesía contemporánea en lengua inglesa como continuidad y como reacción frente al experimentalismo modernista, a través de ejemplos escritos por poetas incluyendo mujeres y minorías étnicas como reflejo de la realidad cultural de las sociedades británica y americana.
- Aplicar estrategias de lectura crítica para apreciar la vanguardia y la experimentación más reciente en la poesía actual.
- To learn the theoretical foundations of modernist poetics, as well as to become familiar with its main poets and the critical works on their conceptual and formal breakaways
- To gain knowledge of Anglo-American modernist poetry and its increasingly radical proposals.
- To understand contemporary poetry in English as both a continuation of and a reaction to modernist experimentalism, through examples written by poets including women and ethnic minorities as a reflection of the cultural reality of British and American societies.
- To apply critical reading strategies to appreciate the avant-garde and the most recent experimentation in contemporary poetry.

Evaluación
The course is designed to include continuous assessment of the student through weekly monitoring of their work (individual class participation, cooperative tasks, individual assignments, essays, etc.) and a theoretical-practical exam at the end of the course. Continuous assessment weight: between 30% and 60% of the final grade, at the discretion of the course professor. Final exam weight: between 40% and 70% of the final grade, at the discretion of the course iprofessor.
